Shift Engineer ( Rotating 4 days on, 4 off, 4 nights on)


Duns, Scottish Borders, TD11 3HS


Reporting to the Shift Team Leader / Shift Manager, the purpose of the role is to be part of the team that provides 24/7 engineering cover for a modern food manufacturer. Ensuring maximum uptime is achieved using exacting engineering standards in the most efficient method possible.

Delivering overall engineering quality through effective response to breakdowns, completion of issued PPM tasks and development of equipment to continuously improve equipment effectiveness over a 24/7 shift whilst maintaining food safety and H&S policy at all times.

Responsibilities will include

    • Responsible for the completion of legible and informative daily shift reports
    • Responsible for the booking out of stock and improvement in relevant stock holding / component specification
    • Responsible for accurately completing all PPM reports as issued and suggesting amendments to ensure the most effective maintenance procedures are used


  • Develop and maintain relationships with all personnel within the customer organisation to maintain excellent service levels and for the acquisition of information
  • To provide concise and accurate Shift handover


  • Breakdowns/Repairs; this requires the Shift Maintenance Engineer to make the most effective use of their resource to effect a quality repair, both within expected time limits and to the standard required
  • Materials; the Shift Maintenance Engineer is to ensure the correct spares are re-ordered following use of stock items and to investigate improved alternatives in order to improve machine effectiveness
  • Strive to improve machine and component effectiveness
  • PPM; is a key role within the engineering function and it will be the Shift Maintenance Engineers responsibility to ensure, PPM targets are met, and follow up to ensure current practices are met and improved if necessary

 Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

 Computer literate

  • Ability to work within a dynamic and challenging environment
  • Ability to plan work to achieve key objectives whilst sometimes under production pressure.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve engineering problems
  • To work as part of a team as well as on own initiative
  • Self-motivation & initiative
  • Relevant engineering qualification
  • Minimum 3yrs FMCG experience
  • Experience working within a food environment would be a distinct advantage but not essential
